Dax Rhen maintains the systems no one remembers funding. Pumps beneath the transit lines. Doors between inhabited floors. Emergency lamps in stations removed from public maps. His repairs are rarely recorded, but thousands of people depend on them. At Platform Nineteen, Dax keeps an old mechanical clock running beside the network terminal. He likes a machine whose mistakes he can see. On the night of the interruption, the terminal jumps forward. The mechanical clock does not. For sixty-one seconds, the two disagree. Then his disconnected service telephone rings. A stranger asks him to keep the station open. Before he can answer, he hears footsteps on the stairs.
